I began writing and speaking about the ShipBuilding concept in 2008. Yet today, more than ever audiences are relating to this concept and desperately needing these tools to strengthen their connections.
The past 20 months has taken a toll on many of our relationships. You have been working selflessly, putting the customer first. Many of you have dealt with homeschooling your children, caring for aging parents, dealing with family dynamics, grief and loneliness. All of this, and trying to balance everything that is being thrown your way. The quality of your personal and professional relationships has a direct impact on your happiness, work satisfaction and leadership effectiveness.
In my research I discovered over 500 words that contain “ship,” such as citizenship, stewardship, friendship, leadership—and the list goes on. The words all seemed positive and building something. Except for shipwreck—that’s what will happen if you don’t take care of them!
- 45% of first marriages end in divorce
- 60% of second marriages end in divorce
- 57% of employees leave their job because of a poor relationship with their manager
Now that’s a lot of turbulence . These are life altering and career changing decisions. Nevertheless, the health and strength of your relationships can have a physical and emotional effect on how you feel and behave in any given day.
I’ve done the research, interviewed countless people, and rediscovered for myself the importance of intentionally and proactively working on the relationships and partnerships that matter most. Since then, I launched the ShipBuilding concept in the book Roadmap to Success that I co-authored with Ken Blanchard and Steven Covey, incorporated ShipBuilding into the Race to Amazing Program and include relationship reflection and building into the Your 10-Year-Old Self Program.
This inspirational and though provoking keynote combines 20 years of sales leadership, building multiple businesses, coaching entrepreneurs and my own personal relationship stories. The intent is to inspire others to rediscover how important their relationships and partnerships are to their happiness and wellbeing. That you are the captain of your own ship and can apply my 5 Key ShipBuilding Concepts to build your relationships to last a lifetime.
